Tissue Engineering in Periodontics

Diseases of the periodontium are multifactorial in nature and are characterized by the destruction of bone and tooth attachment. If left untreated it can eventually lead to premature loss of teeth leading to an esthetically and functionally compromised dentition. Tissue engineering is a multi-disciplinary treatment approach which involves the application of the principles and methods of engineering and life sciences to help in the development of biological alternatives in order to maintain improve or restore the function of damaged tissues and organs. It brings the power of modern biological chemical and physical science to real clinical problems.
