<p><strong><em>To the Lighthouse</em></strong> by <strong>Virginia Woolf</strong> is a modernist novel that explores themes of time memory loss and the complexity of human relationships. Set on the Isle of Skye in Scotland the story revolves around the Ramsay family and their guests over two visits to their summer home separated by a span of ten years.</p><p>The novel is divided into three parts:</p><ol><li><ol><li><strong>The Window</strong> focuses on the Ramsays' daily life especially young James Ramsay's wish to visit the nearby lighthouse and his disappointment when his father dismisses the idea.</li><li><strong>Time Passes</strong> portrays the passage of time war and death including the loss of Mrs. Ramsay.</li><li><strong>The Lighthouse</strong> shows the family's return to the house years later and their emotional reconciliation with the past culminating in the long-awaited trip to the lighthouse.</li></ol></li></ol><p>Told through a stream-of-consciousness style the novel delves deeply into the inner lives of its characters especially Mrs. Ramsay Mr. Ramsay and the painter Lily Briscoe who struggles to finish a painting and find meaning in art and life.</p><p></p><p></p>
