Tom secures a position as a captain's mess boy on the transport ship _Montauk_ which is secretly the _Christopher Colon_ a vessel repurposed for military use. Onboard Tom meets a diverse group of soldiers including a young man named Armande Lateur known as Frenchy who shares his story of fleeing Alsace to escape German oppression. Frenchy's tale of resilience and hope inspires Tom who is already determined to serve his country. As the ship enters the danger zone Tom's sense of duty is heightened and he becomes more aware of the risks involved in wartime service. Despite the challenges Tom's journey is marked by camaraderie personal growth and a deepening understanding of the conflict change.
