In the book Tom Swift is a young inventor who lives with his father Barton Swift in Shopton New York. Tom is interested in all things mechanical and he has a well-equipped workshop in the basement of his house. One day Tom decides to buy a motorcycle. He modifies it with a number of his own inventions including a new engine and a new transmission. Tom is very proud of his motorcycle and he names it the Swift Motor-Cycle. Tom and his friends Ned Newton and Bud Barclay go on a number of adventures with the Swift Motor-Cycle. They ride through the countryside they explore abandoned buildings and they even help to solve a mystery. One day Tom''s father is working on a revolutionary new turbine design. Tom volunteers to transport the blueprints and a prototype of the turbine to Albany New York. However Tom is ambushed by a group of men who are working for a rival company. The men steal the blueprints and the prototype and they leave Tom stranded on the side of the road.
