Blood transfusion is a cellular therapy aimed at correcting a deficiency in one of the blood components. However it is often marred by minor or serious transfusion accidents that can be life-threatening for the recipient if transfusion safety measures are not taken. We conducted a prospective descriptive cross-sectional study by successive recruitment from February 1 2020 to March 31 2021. The main objective was to determine the incidence of transfusion accidents at the Sominé DOLO Hospital in Mopti. A total of 8062 bags of whole blood were transfused. We found 41 transfusion reactions out of 8062 blood products transfused i.e. an incidence of 5/1000. Among the 41 transfusion reactions 22.0% were related to a typing error. Hemolytic reactions were the most frequent with a rate of 46.3% and nearly 30% could not be biologically characterized because of the delay in reporting or the absence of samples or the availability of certain complementary tests.
