Transnationalism

1997 signaled a fundamental change in the socialstructure of Chinese from Hong Kong with disturbing consequences for the Pacific Region. The Sino-BritishJoint Declaration of 1984 set therestoration of Hong Kong to the PRC at July 11997. The impending Handover instigated a wave ofpanic as Hong Kong citizens fled in an exodus. Itsrepercussions still reverberate affecting everyshore it touches. Transnationalism is a chosen way of life for those existing in two worlds.Fundamental changes affect the social structure ofHong Kong Chinese with serious consequences. Thisethnography documents a unique moment in history on areal and personal level: how a people's identity hasbecome paradoxically entrenched while beingforever altered an evolving identity formed bytransnationalism globalization ethnicity & newstructures of kinship ties. It is a study of thedynamics of class economics in a global setting withmajor impact on future global economic migration andsocial trends. Research organizations dealing withimmigration ethnicity & demographics will find datathat allows predictions for future trends that breakdown barriers of prejudice and hostility.
