The book which was published in 1830 describes Cailliés extraordinary expedition across West Africa which led him to become the first European to discover the legendary city of Timbuktu. In the book Caillié describes his journey across West Africas deserts and rainforests stopping to interact with diverse tribes and civilizations along the route. He talks of the difficulties he encountered such as sickness starvation and the threat of robbers and wild animals. In addition Caillié gives a thorough description of his historic voyage to Timbuktu documenting the marketplaces buildings and traditions of the city. When the book was initially released it immediately became a bestseller and received accolades for its evocative depictions of African scenery and culture.
