Description

Troilus and Cressida is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare believed to have been written around 1602. The play is set during the Trojan War and tells the story of the love affair between Troilus a Trojan prince and Cressida the daughter of a Trojan priest who has defected to the Greeks. The play explores the themes of love war honor and betrayal and has been described as a problem play because it defies easy classification as either a tragedy or a comedy. The characters in the play are complex and morally ambiguous and the play questions the traditional ideals of heroism and honor that are often associated with tales of war. In the play Troilus and Cressidas love is complicated by the fact that they are on opposing sides of the war and their relationship is ultimately doomed. Meanwhile the Greek leaders including Achilles Agamemnon and Ulysses engage in political maneuvering and power struggles which contribute to the chaotic and cynical tone of the play. Troilus and Cressida was not well-received during Shakespeares time and it remains one of his lesser-known works. However it has gained renewed interest in recent years for its unique perspective on war and its portrayal of complex and flawed characters.
