Schliemann a German businessman turned amateur archaeologist is famous for his discoveries at the ancient city which was long believed to be a mythological place described in Homer’s Iliad. In this book Schliemann outlines his methods findings and interpretations from his excavations at the site of Hissarlik in modern-day Turkey where he believed the legendary city of Troy was located. The work is part memoir part archaeological report and it captures Schliemann’s enthusiasm and controversial approach to archaeology. Schliemann was driven by the desire to prove that the events described in the Iliad were based on real historical events and he was convinced that he had found the very site of Homer’s Troy.
