TRUTH [VÉRITÉ]

Vérité is inspired by the infamous Dreyfus Affair a political scandal that divided France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The novel is a fictionalized account that mirrors the real-life events surrounding the wrongful conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus a Jewish officer in the French army who was falsely accused of treason. In Vérité Zola tells the story of a similar case where an innocent man is wrongfully accused and convicted due to anti-Semitic prejudice and a conspiracy by powerful figures within the military and government. The protagonist Marc Froment a schoolteacher becomes the champion of truth and justice as he fights to expose the corruption and lies that led to the miscarriage of justice.
