This essay is based on a lecture I gave before various American university audiences in 1970-1971. In the spring of 1971 I returned to China for the first time since 1953. What I learned during seven months of travel and interviews while enriching and deepening my understanding of the Cultural Revolution basically confirmed the account given in these pages. I am indebted to Martin Davis of the Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute and to Hassan Zavareei for taping my lectures at the New School for Social Research and for transcribing them in a form which made this writing possible. - William Hinton
