Type 2 diabetes and COVID-19

COVID-19 the current pandemic is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 retrovirus which mainly leads to acute respiratory distress syndromes and pneumonitis. Furthermore frail and polymorbid individuals are at greater risk of developing severe forms of COVID-19 including patients with type 2 diabetes.The aim of our study is to highlight the relationship between T2DM and COVID-19 and to decipher the various pathophysiological mechanisms involved by answering the following questions: Why do diabetics have a higher mortality rate than non-diabetics? How can all this be explained at the molecular level? What are the pathophysiological mechanisms involved? Are anti-COVID-19 treatments safe for diabetic patients? Does SARS-CoV-2 cause diabetes?
