Born to a humble family in Manipur Mary Kom was hugely inspired by the Manipuri boxer Dingko Singhs success story and started training under the Manipur state boxing coach at Imphal. With a background of strong athleticism and doing hard labour during her childhood she was physically ready for the arduous journey ahead of her.
