Under Boy Scout Colors by Joseph Bushnell Ames is a compelling narrative that follows the journey of Dale Tompkins a young boy who joins the Boy Scouts in Hillsgrove. The story begins with Dale a paperboy who heroically saves a young child from an electric wire showcasing his bravery and quick thinking. Despite his courageous act Dale faces challenges in being accepted by his peers in Troop Five due to his modest background and lack of a proper uniform. The troop is led by Scoutmaster Curtis who recognizes Dale's potential and offers him guidance and support. Dale's initial interactions with the troop particularly with the patrol leader Ranny Phelps are strained as Ranny is dismissive and critical of Dale's appearance and abilities.
