UCG is a method of converting coal to syngas in-situ by gasifying. It could offer a better cost-competitive and sustainable solution than the conventional mining methods. It also provides benefits from those coalfields where the coal seams that could not be otherwise unexploited by open-pit or underground mining and almost inaccessible due to economic viability or environmental safety concerns. Jamalganj coalfield is located in the north-western part of Jamalganj Upazila of Joypurhat district. The coal reserve discovered first in1962 is at a depth of 640 - 1150m. The Jamalganj coalfield is supposed to have an aerial extent of about 11.66-13.06 sq km. The total reserve is estimated at 1053 million tons. According to MAPL study it could have more aerial extent as 40.0 sq km and 6.0 b tons. So this is the largest coal reserve so far explored in Bangladesh.
