The institution also found that in 1950 the global population was estimated at 2.52 billion and by 2010 there was a demographic jump to 6.9 billion representing a growth of 273%. The aforementioned survey also found that 50% of the current population lives in urban areas with a third of these living in slums and informal settlements.
