Us versus Them

Crime and gentrification are among the most hotly-contested urban issues in American cities. In <em>Us versus Them</em> Jan Doering examines both showing how residents activists and politicians clashed over these issues and especially over how race factored into both. The book draws on extensive fieldwork to produce a comprehensive and vivid portrait of community conflict in two racially-diverse Chicago neighborhoods. In doing so it provides new insights into how residents use the criminal justice system to fight crime but advance gentrification in the process.
