Utopia

In Utopia More portrays a society that exists outside of Europe where the principles of communal living social equality and religious tolerance prevail. The island of Utopia is governed by reason and operates under a unique set of laws and customs designed to promote the common good. Key elements of the Utopian society include: Social and Economic Equality: Private property is abolished in Utopia and all citizens live in identical houses and wear the same clothes. The accumulation of wealth is discouraged and everyone works for the common good of society. Communal Living: Families live together in large communal houses where meals are taken together in common dining halls. The emphasis is on community and cooperation rather than individualism. Labor and Leisure: Utopians engage in agricultural and industrial work sharing the tasks equally among citizens. They work for six hours a day leaving the rest of the time for personal development education and leisure activities. Religious Tolerance: Utopians believe in a single divine being but they tolerate different religious beliefs and practices. Religious freedom is granted to all citizens and atheists are regarded as potential moral threats.
