Vandyke Brown is a humorous one-act farce by Adolphus Charles Troughton characterized by its quick pace and slapstick comedy. The plot revolves around a young artist named Vandyke Brown who is struggling to impress both his potential patron and his romantic interest with his artistic skills. However the artist's work is far from impressive and much of the comedy arises from his attempts to hide the truth about his lack of talent. The main conflict arises when Vandyke's work is mistakenly praised as a masterpiece by a wealthy art collector who believes the artist’s sketch is a brilliant new style. As Vandyke tries to keep up the illusion of being a renowned artist a series of misunderstandings and comedic situations ensue particularly when his romantic interest becomes involved. The farce escalates with increasingly ridiculous scenarios involving mistaken identities absurd paintings and clever wordplay.
