Vatan yahud silistre

<p><i>Vatan yahut Silistre</i> (Homeland or Silistre) is a play by Turkish writer Namık Kemal. First published in 1873 it tells the story of the siege of Silistra a fortress on the Danube during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The play extols patriotism and sacrifice for the sake of the homeland. It follows Islam Bey a young Ottoman soldier and Zekiye a young woman who disguises herself as a soldier to fight alongside him.
