About The Book

The aim of this study if to identify traces of Indus valley religion through a study of painted pottery sherds tablets and seals. This includes a study of Indus valley folklore; understanding the significance of geometric and organic motifs with respect to Indus valley religion; understanding their ''deities'' and their idea of worship and god. To reach this understanding it was important to look for the roots or the cultural background that prompted such ideas. The methodology adopted for this was a review of the existing literature on the subject; examining parallels between Indus Valley and existing ''Hindu'' practises; to look for a continuation of Indus Valley visual culture and thus ideas in early Indian sculptural tradition and a review of literature on Indian folk traditions to find possible links to Indus Valley. One important aim of this study was to establish the significance of an art historical study of Indus Valley remains and re-examining certain established ideas. It is hoped that the study will initiate further interest in the subject.
