About The Book

Focus on WWII related memories in museum and memorials

International comparison (Germany and austria in the wider Wetern and Eastern European context + North America)

Views of Violencepresents the first edited collection on the English-speaking market that targets the specific media/genres of museums and memorials in regard to representation of the Second World War in the wider context of European memory culture. It also is the first volume that specifically highlights visualization and spatialization techniques / aspects in this context.

The comparative approach of our book project in which each individual chapter compares current German and Austrian representations of the war with other representations in other European countries allows to discuss whether museums / memorials go (or don’t go) beyond the national.

Whereas the Anglo-American discussion strongly focuses on Holocaust representation / memory culture about the Holocaust this volume highlights the complex relationship of the Second World War the Holocaust and other discourses of suffering and commemoration. Public history and the history of European memory have produced comparative volumes on European memory cultures but there is no specific study on the media / genres of museums and memorials in this context.
