Under the immediate surface of Joel Sloman''s poems a ferocious intelligence is asking hard questions. Although very young only twenty-two he is an accomplished craftsman managing very long lines with complete aplomb. His short lines are never merely short-winded. His work has its own peculiar and engaging music; its tonal structure-so often neglected in phanopoeic poetry-is subtle and haunting.
