Visit the Prince

About The Book

The story revolves around a fictional kingdom where a European prince receives a visit from a group of foreign dignitaries. The group’s purpose is ostensibly to discuss political matters but the interactions reveal the complexities of diplomacy human nature and the tension between appearances and reality. The prince who is more of a symbol of power than an actual leader finds himself caught in a web of superficiality bureaucracy and egos which complicate the intended diplomatic mission. At its core Visit to the Prince is a critique of the artificiality and ineffectiveness of political institutions highlighting the gap between those in power and the true needs of the people. Giraudoux uses the play to comment on the absurdity of modern politics where the leaders are often disconnected from reality and decisions are made for reasons unrelated to the well-being of the people they govern. Through its humor and absurd scenarios the play invites the audience to question the values and priorities of society.
