The novel provides a satirical commentary on the society of the time portraying the political and social elite as self-serving and hypocritical. Vivian Grey is notable for its blend of satire social commentary and elements of Bildungsroman (a novel of personal development). Disraeli drew from his own experiences and observations of the political and social circles in which he moved offering readers a fictionalized glimpse into the power struggles and intrigues of the era. The novel received mixed reviews upon its release but garnered attention for its sharp wit and portrayal of the ambitious protagonist.
