About The Book

This book is a biography of my father Albert Solberg (1903-1996). He was born in Norway joined the Norwegian merchant marine at eighteen and came to the United States in 1924. He endured personal tragedy and a half-dozen brushes with death but also had some amazing experiences in places like India Samoa and South America. Later he worked as a yacht crewman on the Great Lakes. After settling in New York City he married in 1933. He and his wife of 63 years raised six children and he lived to the age of 92. This is a story about adventure hard work and family--how an immigrant carved out a piece of the American Dream. All readers have known someone like Albert who came to America with nothing and created a good life in a new land.
