Nelson Mandela was born on July 18 1918 in the village of Mvezo in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. A member of the Thembu people his early life was shaped by tribal traditions colonial injustice and his father’s proud defiance of British rule. Named Rolihlahla meaning “troublemaker” Mandela was immersed in African customs and values. These childhood experiences in rural Transkei laid the foundation for the resilience and leadership that would later define him.
