Wisbech's Forgotten Hero

About The Book

This little-known but remarkable man was not just a Missionary. He was a writer photographer naturalist and linguist as well. Despite only receiving a primary school education he published several books on Polynesia and Madagascar illustrating them with the then new science of photography and his own drawings. Having taught himself both printing and bookbinding he translated the scriptures and religious texts into the native language for the use of the local congregation. His last days were spent in his English country home enjoying his garden and the plants he had introduced from his travels.
