Britain was at war with its ancient enemy France. The wars of Revolution in due course became the emperor's own Napoleonic Wars. This account commences when Fraser was a junior officer and as his famous regiment was sent to Sicily. It continues into Portugal Spain and the South of France through many engagements siegesmarches retreats and advances as the allied armies under the command of the Duke of Wellington pushed their enemy back within the borders of its motherland. This volume then principally concerns the Peninsular War as the Grenadier Guards knew it combined with the correspondence and eye-witness anecdotes of one of its officers who gaining experience and rank served in the heart of the conflict. This first volume of this two- volume account contains many useful maps and illustrations.
