Woman Doesn't Rime with Angel

About The Book

Nothing Is Completely Black is the debut novel of Lebanese author Azza Tayel. Rather than following a cohesive and closed plot she portrays life through scenes or profound moments that encapsulate entire lifetimes. Each chapter of the novel is a piece that swings between life and death. There are stories situations and conversations that bring the protagonist together with those around her. Faces fade away while others emerge. We follow transitional moments in her life as she experiences motherhood loss and love and when she utterly fails to overcome her memories stretching back to her ancestors and their fates. The narrative does not adhere to a linear timeline but instead jumps across the solid stones of memory taking us to Homs and its bloody massacres then transporting us to Paris that the protagonist visits on various occasions. Yet the return is always to Beirut the city that seems to suffocate with its dead perhaps due to the multitude of its people's bodies that it has swallowed in the past. From the pages of this novel: This was not just a story based on pure imagination but it was also part of a life story. Therefore it will not have the familiar endings where we know the fate of each character. This was a journey accompanied by life and death and a confrontation with them. This was part of a sonata that the musician did not complete. Some say he was afraid of the curse of the ninth symphony specifically and others claim that endings necessarily carry death. As for some others they do not ask because they realize that life is more like a metaphor than a traditional story.
