Wouri mangrove estuary (Cameroon)

About The Book

The Wouri estuary in Cameroon is a natural environment conducive to the development of mangroves. The hydrological marine climatic and soil conditions of the Wouri estuary make this coastal area a living environment. The estuary's geographical position at the bottom of the Gulf of Guinea places the estuarine coastal system at the center of the converging flows of materials and energy needed to maintain the mangrove ecosystem. The mangrove is ideally suited to this site where it thrives in optimal conditions according to the dynamics specific to this intertidal ecosystem. The Wouri estuary is characterized by active sedimentation a mixture of fresh and salt water provided by fluvial rainfall and marine inputs and slight thermal variations throughout the year. The dynamics of plant and animal species depend on their ability to adapt to environmental conditions and their capacity to germinate regenerate and spread. The whole area is supplied with tidal water by a network of creeks and channels which are also the site of pronounced dynamics (erosion/sedimentation).
