Though this novel speaks about war it is not entirely based on it. It is a story of a family which travels through 60 years of various emotions and torments of life. It is set in the early twentieth century during which the entire world was going through various changes. It was the time when colonial rule was at its peak and people were striving to oppose it. All these changes and their impacts are narrated from the perspective of a family. Narrated without exaggeration the unique style of Ashokamitran echoes everywhere in this novel.
