The story takes place in a world where for purpose of population control the monetary system has been replaced with time. Each citizen is fitted with a time tracker that reflects the amount of time in said citizens time bank. Like money a citizen can acquire time through work inheritence gift and can lose time by way of purchases mistakes disasters etc. Into this world comes Teaser Broadnax an unknowing participant in a ground-breaking experiment where the consequence of poverty . . . is death.
