While exploring a cave with Becky Tom and Huck witness a group of criminals burying stolen treasure. The boys try to keep their discovery a secret but they are soon pursued by the criminals. In a dramatic showdown Tom and his friends manage to capture the criminals and retrieve the stolen treasure. The novel ends with Tom and Huck swearing never to reveal the location of the treasure and Tom returning to school as a reformed student having learned the importance of honesty and hard work. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a classic coming-of-age story that captures the essence of American childhood in the 19th century. Twains writing is witty humorous and poignant and his characters are colorful and memorable. Through Toms adventures Twain explores themes such as morality loyalty and the importance of education.
