The Poison Belt is a novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1913. It is a sequel to his earlier work The Lost World and features the same group of adventurers: George Challenger John Roxton Professor Summerlee and E.D. Malone. The story begins with the four men gathering at Challenger's home to witness a strange phenomenon in the sky. They soon discover that the Earth is passing through a cloud of poisonous gas which will kill all life on the planet within hours. The group decides to spend their remaining time together discussing their past adventures and the fate of humanity. As the gas approaches they all fall into a deep sleep and awaken to find that they have miraculously survived. They explore the now-dead world encountering eerie and surreal sights and eventually stumble upon a group of other survivors.
