About The Book
Description
Author
The Post Office is a fictional account of an eight-year-old child who is quarantined inside his home by his family doctor due to his terminal illness. He only has a porthole through which to view the outside world. He strikes up eager discussions with the people he passes by. Sudha the daughter of a flower vendor has promised to deliver bouquets for him. The watchman informs him that the large structure bearing the flag is the new Post Office for the monarch. He creates a make-believe universe for himself based on his fantasy that he will receive a letter from the King. He looks forward to the kings arrival and fantasies of becoming the royal postman. A glimpse into Tagores profound knowledge of the human spirit which finds hope even in the face of hopelessness can be found in The Post Office. It shows the pleasure of the open road without being held captive and the free spirit. Additionally Tagores symbolism permeates the entire play and explains the status of India today; it aids in creating powerful imagery of the past present and future of the nation.
