David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was the son of a coal-miner and a mother from a family with middle-class aspirations.He was a novelist poet travel writer short story writer playwright art critic as well as one of the most consummate letter writers of the twentieth century. We have some 5500 letters and postcards by Lawrence and no doubt many have not survived were deliberately destroyed or remain to be discovered.
